IBA Wien in Thessaloniki

Wie wohnen wir morgen?

„Wie werden wir morgen wohnen?“ lautet die Frage, welche die Internationale Bauausstellung Wien (IBA) im Oktober 2025 in Thessaloniki aufwirft. Die Initiative rückt insbesondere die Wohnungskrise in den Mittelpunkt der architektonischen Forschung, aber auch der politischen Maßnahmen und Forderungen für die Stadt. Die Eröffnung fand am 16. Oktober 2025 statt. Mit dabei war auch der Leiter der IBA_Wien 2016-2022 Kurt Hofstetter.

Neben der Hauptausstellung „Wie werden wir morgen wohnen? – Neues soziales Wohnen in Wien“ sowie der Parallelausstellung „Das Modell des sozialen Wohnungsbaus in Wien und der Fall Thessaloniki“ findet auch ein internationales Symposium im Rathaus Thessaloniki statt. Organisiert wird die Veranstaltung vom Fachbereich Architektur der Aristoteles-Universität Thessaloniki in Zusammenarbeit mit der Stadt Wien und mit Unterstützung der Österreichischen Botschaft Athen und dem Honorarkonsulat Thessaloniki, der Stadt Thessaloniki und unter der Schirmherrschaft der Polytechnischen Fakultät der Universität Thessaloniki.

Besonders bemerkenswert ist, dass die griechischen Kollegen anscheinend vom Wiener Modell insgesamt so begeistert waren, dass sie ihre Ausstellung sowie alle Goodies ganz im Wiener design und Lay-Out gestalteten.

Smarter Together Wien war Teil der IBA_Wien. Deshalb wird dieses besondere Wiener Projekt, das 2021 abgeschlossen wurde, auch in Thessaloniki noch einmal vorgestellt.

IBA_Vienna in Thessaloniki - together with Smarter Together

„How will we live tomorrow?“ is the question posed by the International Building Exhibition Vienna (IBA) in Thessaloniki in October 2025. The initiative focuses on the housing crisis, particularly in architectural research, but also in political measures and demands for the city. The opening took place on October 16, 2025. Kurt Hofstetter, director of IBA_Vienna 2016-2022, was also present.

In addition to the main exhibition „How will we live tomorrow? – New social housing in Vienna“ and the parallel exhibition „The model of social housing in Vienna and the case of Thessaloniki,“ an international symposium also takes place at Thessaloniki City Hall. Further information on the program is available here. The exhibition runs until November 4, 2025.

The event is organized by the Department of Architecture of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in cooperation with the City of Vienna, with the support of the Austrian Embassy in Athens and the Honorary Consulate in Thessaloniki, the City of Thessaloniki, and under the patronage of the Polytechnic Faculty of the University of Thessaloniki.

It is particularly noteworthy that the Greek colleagues were apparently so enthusiastic about the Vienna model that they designed their exhibition and all the goodies entirely in the Viennese style and layout.

Smarter Together Vienna was part of the IBA_Vienna. Therefore, this special Viennese project, which was completed in 2021, will be presented again in Thessaloniki.
